Tid-Bits on Troop 281 Alumni
-
Barry Akins
(Late 1960's)
I was an active member of this Troop for a couple of years
in the late 60's and recall a wonderful time. Our ScoutMaster was
Mr Boboltz (his son was Dave as I recall) and we had a real active
feller (CC?) named Fred Stricker that I'd really like to connect
with... Some of my good friends were Greg Curless (teaching middle
school somewhere?) Tom Cook (ended up in the Navy?) Bob Gels, John
Carver, Mark Hamill, Eric Bose, Scott Barngrover, Gary Mason (who got his Eagle in 1972 I
noticed) Shortly after receiving my Star rank I moved out of town, and that was it
for some reason... We used to do paper drives for fundraising...
This was a special Troop and I took a great deal from it; doing
the best I can with my son's Troop as he works his way up. If
you've got any contact with some 30 year veterans or any really
old historical stuff I'd love to see it. Thanks!

Gregg Curless (Late 60's to Early 70's)
My name is Gregg Curless and I was the senior patrol leader of
Troop 281 during the early 70’s. (71-72?)
Barry, I was thrilled to see your entry and would like to connect
with you or any 281 member.
I remember my times with Troop 281 as one of the greatest times of
my life! Going to Philmont with the Cincinnati provisional troop
in 1971, snowbird campouts, Peterloons, summer camp at Lee Boboltz’s
hunting camp near Alpena, Michigan in 1970, and countless other
times.
I have been an elementary school principal for the past 19 years
and have just completed my 25th year in education. I am currently
the principal of the newly formed Pattison Elementary School in
Milford, Ohio. I have a daughter who is 21, a son who is 20, and
another son who is 16.
Does anyone remember Tommy Cook’s Fred Stricker songs?
I would love to hear from anyone from the old troop!

Dave Boboltz (1967 - 1972)
My name is Dave Boboltz and I was a member of Troop 281 from 1967 until 1972. I belonged to the Panther Patrol, eventually being Patrol Leader, and I was also the troop Senior Patrol Leader. I achieved the rank of Life Scout and had the great opportunity to participate in the National Jamboree in 1969 in Farragut State Park in Idaho. I also went to Philmont in 1971. We had a large number of scouts from our troop that went to Philmont that year, including John Carver, Tom Cook, Gregg Curless, Mark Wines, Mark Roberto, and Scott Barngrover. Several other scouts from Anderson school system were on the trip. Our crew leader was Chic Block.
Our troop did a lot of canoe trips on the Little Miami River. We used to camp at the Morgan's farm near Fort Ancient for our trips. John Carver's father had an old Coney Island canoe that was narrower than most canoes, and John and I would always finish before every other canoe.
My father Lee was Scoutmaster from 1969 to 1971. We went on two summer camp trips to northern Michigan to a 960 acre deer hunting camp that my father belonged to. The camp was called the Wildcat Club. It was a great opportunity for scouts to work on advancing their rank or working on merit badge requirements. I also remember one night when Doug Curless brought a laughing box into the barracks building. He turned it on in the middle of the night and soon had everyone in the barracks building laughing out loud.
I graduated from Anderson High School in 1974 and became an engineer for General Motors for 31 years. I have since retired and now enjoy outdoor recreation such as ski patrolling in the winter, kayaking lakes and rivers in Michigan, and climbing Colorado 14ers in the summer.

Jeff Taylor (Eagle Scout 1976)
My name is Jeff Taylor and I was active in Troop 281 from 1970
through 1977. Gregg and Troy, I think I bridge the gap between you
two. What a great treat to see 281's site! It was also fun to see
some of the names that have been listed here. Just thinking about
all of the Cook boys (Tom, Jim, Jerry) made me laugh. And Gregg,
I'd pay good money to hear the Fred Stricker song again! I too,
remember summer camp at Lee Boboltz's hunting lodge in Michigan. I
also remember Klondike Derbies at Lower Craig, (I still have the
sled we used!) National Jamboree in 1973 with Karl Vogt and all of
the other great times I had. Some of my best - life long -
friendships were developed in 281. Tom Riemar, Gary Justice, Chris
Anderson, Mike Tarvin - all great guys and all 281 alums. Like
most of us, I'm back involved. My son is a scout in Troop 209 in
Madeira and he's going to the National Jamboree next summer.

Troy Conran (Eagle Scout 1976)
I moved from Ohio to Maryland in 1978. I have great memories
of the camping trips and summer camps. The skills I learned in
scouting I have used in life. I am a Certified Public Accountant
and obtained a Masters Degree in Finance. I have been married for
20 years with four children. I was a scout leader with Troop 555
in Maryland while my son was active in scouting. We were able to
participate in monthly camping trips, summer camps and high
adventures. My son is now in college. My accounting profession
pays the bills and allows me to travel the world competing in
triathlons. I am an Ironman Triathlon. An ironman distance
triathlon includes 2.4 miles swimming, 112 bicycling, and 26.2
miles running. This year I will have finished all of the North
American Ironman events including Ironman Florida, Ironman
California, Ironman Utah, Ironman Canada, Ironman Idaho, Ironman
Lake Placid, Ironman Wisconsin, and Hawaii.
